Learning Goals for April

Reading -  Reading several nonfiction books written by the same author.  Review the priority nonfiction comprehension work done previously as you read. Ask students to explain what a specific paragraph or section is mainly about, explain information found in specific graphic features of text, & explain why specific graphic features were included in the text. Once you have read several books by the same author, notice similarities between the books.

Notice similarities in books written by the same author
Use what you know about an author or series to make predictions
Know strategies to navigate and comprehend chapter books

his book review unit
kicks off
the final nine weeks of the school year.
Students
have
grown their knowledge of writing for many purposes. Through the course of the year your
students have read a variety of books and have developed ideas about the books they have
read.
Your writers will see
that writing a book review requires clear org
anization and
elaboration of ideas to explain
deeper, to grow new thinking, and to share that thinking with
their peers through a written review. It will be through clear and simple demonstrations that
you will show your students
how we can read for enjoym
ent and share that enjoyment with
others
. Book reviews can be a wonderful way to help children see that their writing can make
a difference to others.
While this unit is centered on writing book reviews, you will also make sure that you
model how to write longer, more complex sentences and support your writers as they learn
to do this as well. Explore compound sentence structure, and encourage your write
rs to
revise by combining short sentences.
Meet your students’ variety of needs by grouping those
who have common goals and meeting with them in small groups to support them. As always
you will make time for the revision process. Revising for word choice or clarification is an end
of year expectation for second graders so make sure you zoom in on these concepts during
this unit.
